From its humble beginings as the vision of two college kids all the way up to becoming one of the largest fantasy entertaiment franchises. The history of Dungeons and Dragons is filled with almost as many pit traps and monsters as the game itself. Created in 1974 by Gary Gygax and David Arneson D&D started life as a set of wargame rules before becoming the first table top RPG. To learn more about the history of D&D click here.

Over the years Dungeons and Dragons has been the target of negative press, mostly coming from the religious community. This Controversy was most prevelant during the early years of the game as well as during the 1980s. While for the most part the game has become accepted today there are still groups that advocate against Dungeons and Dragons as well as role playing in general. Between 1983 and 1985 TSR ran a television series on CBS based off of the Dungeons and Dragons universe. This series in actuality had very little to do with the Role Playing Game that it takes it's name from. The series involved young children who are transported into the world of Dungeons and Dragons via an evil Carnival ride. The first full length Dungeons and Dragons movie was released in 2000. Simply titled Dungeons and Dragons the first movie did poorly in the box office but still spawned a direct to TV sequel in 2005. Dungeons and Dragons stared life as a wargame rule set called Chainmail. In 2002 Wizards of the Coast released a miniature wargame based off of the D20 ruleset used by Dungeons and Dragons called Chainmail. This was quickly replaced by Dungeons and Dragons Miniatures, doing away with the metal figures in favor of prepainted plastic miniatures.

Over the years there have been many board games based on the lore of Dungeons and Dragons. Most of these games have been designed as in introduction to the world of table-top role playing. In recent years however Wizrards of the Coast has begun to release full feature board games that are designed to be played on their own. The game that started it all. Dungeons and Dragons was the first table top RPG in the world and remains one of the top selling today. Dungeons and Dragons has seen many variations over the years but the core focus of high fantasy adventure remains unchanged. Dungeons and Dragons has more options available to players then any other RPG on the market today. With it's numerous versions and source books there is something for every RPG player.

Released in 2006 Dungeons and Dragons Online was the first big step into the world of MMORPGs for the Dungeons and Dragons franchise. This was not the first online game based on the Dungeons and Dragons world, but it was the biggest. DDO did not do well at first and received a makeover and changed to the free-to-play model that has become common with MMORPGs today.
